Lines And Families History :

The Line and Family System in Cairns was started after the work of Mr & Mrs Casperez.

To achieve this they did a complete analysis of the pedigrees of all Cairn Terrier champions before 1933.

Then they used the Bruce Lowe Scheme (Originally for Horses).

Which consists of tracing back the Sire to his original male ancestor and the Dam back to her original female ancestor.

Results Of Tha Analysis :

This analysis was used to determine that

there were 11 original male lines and 55 original female families.

Note : These results were compiled into a book Named : Cairn Terrier Records, published in 1932

The Lines found are the following to the best of our knowledge :

1. A - "Ames" (Founder) - No Branches

2. B - "Badger" (Founder) Branch BC - (Through "Gesto")

3. C – "Cluaran" (Founder) - No Branches

4. D – "Duan" (Founder) - Four Branches as follows :

DR - Through "Raeburn Conas"

DG - Through "Gillie of Hyver"

DGS - Through "Splinters of Twobees"

DF - Through "Firring Frolic"

5. G - "Glenmhor Pride" - Four Branches as follows :

GR - Through "Harviestoun Raider"

GB - Through "Harviestoun Brigand"

GC - Through "Harviestoun Chieftain"

GF - Through "Harviestoun Forgie"

6. I – "Iver" – One Branch as follows :

IG - Through "Ross-shire Glenara"

7. J - "Jack" (Founder) - No Branches

8. SD - "Shona" (Through "Dougall Out Of The West")

9. SK - "Sky"

10. SN - "Snip Of Harris"

11. T - "Tony Clarence"

For the ease of our Database we have added a W Line, which is basically all dogs known to be West Highland White Terriers :

In the present Cairns, most can be traced back to their original Line.

Family numbers have increased over the years, but most of the present Cairns, can be traced back to a Family.

How Lines And Families Are Shown on Pedigrees of Cairns :

Lines and Families are usually shown on a pedigree in the following way :

The Line which can be upto three letters followed by / then the Family which is numbers.

Example : ABC/123 (Is not often included in a Cairns official pedigree.)
